Gold is fascinating because it has this reputation as an inflation hedge, but it’s not! It has not been a good historical infaltion hedge. In the 2013 paper “The Golden Dilemma”, it was shown that gold might be an effective inflation hedge if the investment horizon is measured in centuries!
Over more practial investment horizons gold is an unreliable inflation hedge at best. With its real price swinging wildly. They also looked at the relationship between unexpected changes in inflation and gold prices, and found no correlation between them.
