Parental Leave - how to get as much time off as possible? Combination of vacations and parental leave?

Hi there, I’m fairly new to Sweden, so excuse me for not writing in English.

I have a question regarding maximising the parental leave. I work for a company that provides Supplementary compensation thus I’d have 90% of salary - great. But I would need to take 7 days every week, meaning if I want to take 4 months off, I would go thought my parental leave quickly and won’t have much left

To solve it, I wanted to take only 5 days a week, but after talking to Payroll, the issue is that if I take 5 days as parental leave in Week 1, and same in Week 2, the system assumes I’m on full 7 day parental leave and marks it as 7 days. Not good

To break that I was thinking I could take Mondays as regular vacations. Meaning, 1 day vacation and then 4 days parental leave. In that case the system would not assume I’m taking a full parental leave, and I can take 5 days. I counted that finacially it would work well. And for protecting SGI I have 5 days covered. I would need to code every week on my own, but with this I could also take advantage of public holidays and have extra days off.

I guess I could make it happen at my work, but I wanted to check if this is ok/legal in Sweden. We have a collective agreement from Unionen, and it seems to state that I can take only 3 periods of parental leave a year. Kinda weird, dunno who checks it, but could this still work somehow? It says if a person takes regular " day off every week", then it is taken as one period. If I interpret it in my words, if I take 4 days a week, every week, then I guess that is one period too.

I hope it is not too complicated :stuck_out_tongue: Thank you in advance.

// Essentially there is a huge difference. 180 days / 7 days is 25 weeks, and 180 days / 4 days is amazing 45 weeks (of course I’d need 45 vacations days, so that would need to be solit into 2 years).

There is no universal recipe for this. You can try the planning tool of Försäkringskassan to see what might work.

In campanies providing extra parental salary there are often additional rules that limit your flexibility. You may for example have to take the whole parental leave as one big chunk, rather than dividing it into little pieces. You had better to have these rules in writing before starting to be creative. There may be loopholes but you had better to check beforehand with the employee that these actually work.

Hi @Anonym, thanks for your reply and sharing your concerns.

I did check it with company and they want to take it in chunks (7 days) but my manager is okay if I take how so want to take it.

Försäkringskassan took doesn’t seem to have any probeblems.

I was thinking about it over night and the logical and legal way would be asking for Part time parental leave on Tue to Friday so it is considered as one period and then just taking vacations on Monday.

I’ve planned my parental leave as this I take Friday, saturday, sunday then you get your ordinary salary x 0,9 x 3, you can also choose four days to do this but it can only be on mondays.

Maybe I am misunderstanding something but which system would assume 7 days? If you apply for 5 days/week from Försäkringskassan only 5 days will be deducted per week. If it is your employers system it wouldn’t affect how many days you have remaining since that is based in the FK-system.

Also, you are probably aware of this already but you do not need to take any days to protect SGI the first year.

My first year on parental leave I took full additional pay from my job but no days from FK, as a result I had all days remaining when my daughter turned 1.
